Actor Edward Hardwicke dead at 78

LONDON, May 17 (UPI) -- British actor Edward Hardwicke has died, his family said. He was 78.

The Telegraph confirmed his death but did not report the cause of it.

Hardwicke is best known for his work in the 1970s television series "Colditz," as well as in the series "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" in the 1980s, and several Sherlock Holmes TV movies in the 1980s and '90s, The Telegraph noted. His big-screen credits include "A Guy Named Joe," "Shadowlands," "The Scarlet Letter" and "Love Actually."

Born in London, Hardwicke was the son of actors Cedric Hardwicke and Helena Pickard. He was a pilot officer in the Royal Air Force and studied at England's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

He is survived by his second wife, Prim Cotton, as well as by two daughters from his first marriage to Anne Iddon, who died in 2000, The Telegraph said.
