One Direction announces N. American tour

NEW YORK, March 21 (UPI) -- British pop group One Direction has announced plans for its first headlining North American concert tour from May 24 to July 1.

The shows are to support their debut CD "Up All Night," which is No. 1 on the U.S. album chart. The British group is the first to hit No. 1 in the United States with their first album.

The tour is to kick off May 24 in Fairfax, Va., and includes stops in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto and Dallas. It will wrap up July 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

One Direction gained notoriety in 2010 after competing on the U.K. version of "The X Factor."
