"We are honored to be designated a Global Icon," Queen's Brian May said in statement Wednesday. "We will do our best to be worthy."

Bruce Gillmer, executive vice president of talent and music programming at Viacom International Media Networks, said Queen has made "an indelible impact on the pop music landscape."

Queen was formed in 1971 by May, Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. They signed their first recording contract with EMI in late 1972 and released their first single "Keep Yourself Alive" in 1973.

Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991.
