Winehouse autopsy inconclusive

LONDON, July 25 (UPI) -- An autopsy conducted on the body of British singer Amy Winehouse Monday did not explain why she died Saturday at the age of 27, officials said.

Winehouse had a high-profile substance abuse problem and suffered from related health issues.

However, London's Metropolitan Police said an autopsy conducted at St. Pancras Mortuary did not establish a definitive cause of death.

"We are awaiting the results of further toxicology tests," the investigators said in a statement issued to UsMagazine.com.

The test results are not expected to be available for at least two to four weeks, UsMagazine.com said.

The Hollywood Reporter said the Grammy Award winner's body was to be released for burial shortly after the autopsy was completed and she is expected to be buried quickly in keeping with Jewish tradition. The entertainment industry trade newspaper also noted open casket viewings and cremation are forbidden under Jewish law.

Britain's The Sun newspaper said Winehouse may have been dead for as long as six hours before her body was discovered in bed by a security guard Saturday afternoon.

Police sources told The Sun there was no sign of drugs in the house at the time.

"Amy was on her own at home apart from a security guard who we had appointed to help look after her over the past couple of years," Winehouse's friend and publicist Chris Goodman said.

"She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep and when he went to wake her he found she wasn't breathing," Goodman said. "He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed."
