LONDON, July 24 (UPI) -- Amy Winehouse's family said Sunday the singer's death this weekend in London was devastating and asked for privacy for the time being.
In a written statement released Sunday, Janis and Mitch Winehouse and their son, Alex, asked for privacy while they grieved, People magazine said.
"Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives," the statement said. "We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time."
Celebrities from Hollywood and the music world have taken to social media to express their grief over the 27-year-old Grammy-winner's untimely death from causes that remained under investigation Sunday.
"My heart goes out to her family," actress Demi Moore said on Twitter. "May her troubled soul find peace."
Singer Jesse J tweeted there were tears "streaming down my face." She added, "Such a loss."
The BBC said Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones announced his former band, the Faces, "would dedicate an upcoming reunion gig" to Winehouse.
Winehouse's battle with substance abuse was no secret to the media and public; however, her representative said she had solid support from friends, family and colleagues who wanted to "help her return to her best."
The cause of her death has not been announced.
