PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, March 20 (UPI) -- American hip-hop singer Wyclef Jean was shot in the hand while in Haiti campaigning for presidential candidate Michel Martelly, officials said.

Jean was treated and released from a hospital in Port-au-Prince for a gunshot wound to his right hand Saturday, although details of the incident were not available, al-Jazeera reported Sunday.

Jean, 41, said last year he would run for president of the earthquake-ravaged country. When he was told he was ineligible, he put his support behind Martelly, who faces former first lady Mirlande Manigat in Sunday's presidential runoff election.

Jean's spokeswoman, Cindy Tanenbaum, told CNN the injury was superficial.

"He is doing well," Tanenbaum said Sunday.
