'Bye Bye Birdie' leaving Broadway nest

NEW YORK, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The Broadway revival of the musical "Bye Bye Birdie" is scheduled to close Jan. 24, New York's Roundabout Theatre Company has announced.

The production has sold at more than 90 percent capacity each week throughout its run, its producers said Wednesday. The show is to close as the contracts of stars John Stamos, Gina Gershon, Nolan Gerard Funk and Bill Irwin expire.

"We had hoped to keep the show running into the Spring, however sales are not strong enough after the departure of our principal actors," Roundabout's artistic director Todd Haines said in a statement. "We made a decision to end the production on a high note. I am happy that we have been able to extend the production two weeks beyond the initial run."

After a 48-year absence from Broadway, the revival of "Bye Bye Birdie" was the inaugural production of the new Henry Miller's Theatre in Manhattan.

The musical will have played 40 previews and 117 performances by the time it closes. Preview performances began Sept. 10 and the show officially opened Oct. 15.
