SEOUL, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- South Korean Netflix original movie Jung_E topped the charts internationally for four consecutive days on its premiere, according to data streaming tracker FlixPatrol.

It was the most popular movie in its home, South Korea, as well as in almost 30 other countries, including Brazil, France, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam.

Jung_E was also the most popular movie for Netflix in the U.S. for four days in a row starting Friday.

Set in the nearly uninhabitable 22nd-century Earth, the movie tells a dystopian story about a civil war whose outcome hinges on an ambitious project to come up with the perfect, combat-tailored artificial intelligence.

The AI is designed to clone the brain of an elite soldier in order to create the perfect robot mercenary.

The movie, directed by Yeon Sang-ho, received 5.4 points on a 10-point scale on IMDb, but despite the not-so-stellar rating the audience continued to watch.

"It's a sci-fi movie with universal themes, themes all audiences can appreciate," Yeon told a press event before the release of Jung_E.

"My intention was to bring together a science fiction story and classic Korean melodrama, something that could make people shed tears," the 45-year-old director said.

South Korean actors Kim Hyun-joo, Ryu Kyung-soo and Park So-yi star in the movie. Kang Soo-youn, the internationally acclaimed actress who died in May, also appears in the movie.

An affiliate of a Korean entertainment company Contentree Joongang, the movie was produced by Climax Studio, the same studio that made Hellbound two years before, also directed by Yeon.

The share price of Contentree rose 2.25% on the South Korean stock exchange Wednesday. Climax Studio is not listed.
