June 23 (UPI) -- The next Transformers film will be titled Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and take place in 1994 in Brooklyn, Paramount announced during a virtual press event.

Anthony Ramos (In the Heights) and Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah) will star in the film, which will feature characters from 1990s animated series Beast Wars.

Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) is serving as director. The film will also travel to Peru and other locations.

Beast Wars featured robots that could disguise themselves as animals. The heroes were known as Maximals with the villains referred to as Predacons. Both groups will be in the new film along with the Autobots and Decepticons.

"In our particular film, they are prehistoric animals who travel through time and space, and we find them here on Earth," Caple said during the press event alongside producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Optimus Prime will return and will once again be voiced by Peter Cullen. He will be joined by Optimus Primal of Beast Wars fame, a gorilla, that transforms. Scourge will be the villain.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set to hit theaters on June 24, 2022. Paramount last released the 1980s-set Bumblebee in 2018.
