June 14 (UPI) -- Niantic, the developer behind Pokemon Go, has announced a new Transformers augmented reality mobile game.

Transformers: Heavy Metal will receive a soft launch in select countries soon with a global launch planned for later in 2021, Niantic said in a blog post on Monday.

The company is partnering with Transformers toy companies Hasbro and TOMY on the project. Seattle-based studio Ver Very Spaceship is developing the game.

Transformers: Heavy Metal will be free-to-play with in-app purchases. Further details about the game will be announced at a later date.

"This will be a Transformers game unlike any other, an AR game where you'll get to team up with the likes of Bumblebee and the Autobots in the real world, powered by the Niantic Lightship platform," executive producer Phil Hong said.

Niantic released Pokemon Go in 2016 and fellow AR game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in 2019.
