May 31 (UPI) -- Jason Momoa is exiting a pending remake of The Crow. The 38-year-old actor apologized to fans in an Instagram post Thursday following reports he and director Corin Hardy formally withdrew from a remake of the 1994 movie.

"I've waited 8 years to play this dream role. I love you @corinhardy and @sonypictures unfortunately I may have to wait 8 more. Not our team. But I swear I will," Momoa wrote.
"James O'Barr sorry to let you down I won't on the next," he added, referencing The Crow comic book series creator. "This film needs to be set free. And to the fans. Sorry. I can't play anything but what this film deserves and it needs love. I'm ready when it's right. Love u Corin aloha j."
Deadline reported Momoa and Hardy exited the project Thursday morning. Pre-production on the film was underway, while production was to begin within the next five weeks in Budapest, Hungary.
Sony Pictures reportedly picked up The Crow remake in September, although sources said the deal hasn't closed. Insiders said Samuel Hadida, whose Davis Films was financing the film, had creative and financial differences with Sony, leading to Momoa and Hardy's departures.
The Crow debuted as a comic in 1989. The original movie adaptation starred Brandon Lee, who died at age 28 in March 1993 after being unintentionally shot with live ammunition on the film's set.
