June 19 (UPI) -- Principal photography began Monday on the next installment in Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' cinematic MonsterVerse.

The as-yet-untitled followup to 2014's Godzilla and this year's Kong: Skull Island stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds and Zhang Ziyi.

Michael Dougherty is directing the picture from a script he penned with Zach Shields.

"The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah," a press release said. "When these ancient super-species -- thought to be mere myths -- rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance."
