LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Tom Cruise says he's open to Top Gun 2 if the right idea comes along. The 54-year-old actor, who played Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the original 1986 movie, discussed the possibility of a sequel while recalling his time on the film Tuesday on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

"It's just got to be right, that's all," Cruise told host Jimmy Kimmel. "We just have to figure it out."
Top Gun earned $356 million at the box office and was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2015. The movie followed Maverick, a young Navy aviator, as he trained at the Fighter Weapons School in San Diego.
"We did all the training and now came the day that we've got to fly," Cruise recalled of filming. "First flight in the morning, we were going really hard and moving around. We did nine and a half Gs. I had the bag, the vomit bag [between my legs] and in between takes [I would throw up]."
"I had two more flights after that in the day. We got incredible footage. You know, flew twice the speed of sound. It was really incredible, just unbelievable," he added.
Cruise had expressed interest in a sequel at the Munich premiere of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol in 2011. The star revealed at the time that he'd been in contact with director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
"I never thought I would ever consider that, but Tony Scott and I, the director, and Jerry Bruckheimer, we've been hammering out a little bit of a story to see where that could go and what that world would be like today," he told the Telegraph.
"I'd love to fly those airplanes. I want to get back in those airplanes -- they're fantastic. They're fantastic planes. We're talking about it," the actor added.
Cruise is slated for American Made with Domhnall Gleeson and The Mummy reboot with Sofia Boutella. He will also reprise Ethan Hunt in M:I 6 - Mission Impossible.
