LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Ben Affleck is a 1920's gangster in the first teaser trailer for his next directorial effort, Live by Night.

The clip, released Thursday, features Affleck, who also wrote and produced the film as Joe Coughlin, the son of a Boston police captain who after returning home from war, starts a massive crime spree in his search for power.

"I signed up to fight in the war. I went away a soldier," the actor notes in the trailer. "I came home an outlaw."

As the bodies pile up, Coughlin's success begins to crumble as he is seen being sent to jail and later confronted by a powerful mob boss out for revenge.

"The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw," reads the film's official synopsis.

"But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa's steamy rum-running underworld."
