ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Mel Gibson confirmed that he is developing a follow-up to The Passion of the Christ entitled The Resurrection.

"And you know, it's not the Passion 2. It's called The Resurrection," Gibson clarified recently while discussing the project with Pastor Greg Laurie at the 2016 SoCal Harvest, a christian event according to IndieWire.

"Of course, that's a very big subject and it needs to be looked at because we don't want to just do a simple rendering of it — you know, read what happened," the filmmaker continued.

Previously, screenwriter Randall Wallace, who worked with Gibson on Braveheart, confirmed that a Passion of the Christ follow-up was in the works noting, "The Passion is the beginning and there's a lot more story to tell."

"In order to read it, experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it's about, it's going to take some doing and Randall Wallace is up to the task,' Gibson added of his screenwriting partner who also penned his latest film, Hacksaw Ridge.

Released in 2004, The Passion of the Christ starring Jim Caviezel, Maia Morgenstern and Monica Bellucci was a box-office smash taking in more then $600 million globally.
