LOS ANGELES, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- British actor Patrick Stewart told interviewer Larry King he will not appear as his iconic character Professor Xavier in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse.

"No. Nor Sir Ian McKellen either," Stewart said about his longtime friend and frequent collaborator.

"I was learning quite a lot more about it last night and it is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters," Stewart explained. "And, so, I don't think we'll be making an appearance."

Stewart and McKellen starred as Xavier and Magneto in several X-Men movies, but the most recent films were prequels that re-cast the characters with younger actors James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.

The most recent installment in the franchise, X-Men: Days of Future Past, featured a time-travel element, so that both the younger and older versions of the characters could appear in the same movie.

King's full interview with Stewart is to run Wednesday on Ora.TV and Hulu.
