American Film Institute names best films and TV shows of 2014

"They are a part of our American cultural heritage -- collectively, a new chapter in the story of the art form and of our nation," says AFI's Bob Gazzale of the organization's lists for the best films and TV shows of 2014.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- The American Film Institute says 11 movies and 10 TV shows have made its year-end lists for the best of 2014.

The roster of films includes -- in alphabetical order -- American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, Interstellar, Into the Woods, Nightcrawler, Selma, Unbroken and Whiplash.

The organization also recognized the following for excellence on the small screen: The Americans, Fargo, Game of Thrones, How to Get Away with Murder, Jane the Virgin, The Knick, Mad Men, Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley and Transparent.

"We celebrate these films and television programs as more than just milestones in a year of excellence," Bob Gazzale, AFI president and chief executive officer, said in a statement Monday. "They are a part of our American cultural heritage -- collectively, a new chapter in the story of the art form and of our nation."
