LOS ANGELES, June 19 (UPI) -- "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" director Marc Webb says Shailene Woodley's portrayal of Mary Jane Watson has been cut from the Hollywood sequel.

"I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship," Webb told The Hollywood Reporter. "Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone reprise their roles of Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

According to Spider-Man mythology, Peter dates Mary Jane after his romance with Gwen ends.

The Hollywood Reporter said Mary Jane will now be introduced in the next movie, but the role will likely be played by another actress.

"Of course, I'm bummed," Woodley told EW.com. "But I'm a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason ... based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

Woodley, 21, is best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in "The Descendants" and her work on TV's "Secret Life of the American Teenager."
