PETALUMA, Calif., May 19 (UPI) -- An estimated 30,000 fans of George Lucas' "American Graffiti" gathered where the film was shot in Petaluma, Calif., to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
About 370 classic cars and hot rods were lined up and on display Saturday as part of the Petaluma Salute to American Graffiti event that began Friday, the Santa Rosa (Calif.) Press reported Sunday.
Even the 1967 Citroen 2CV driven by Richard Dreyfuss' character in the film was on view, brought in by its current owner and "American Graffiti" aficionado Jerry Causbrook.
"I've seen [the movie] probably 600 or 700 times," Causbrook said, adding that he serves as a consultant for re-enactments of the film.
The event -- put on for a ninth year by Cruisin' The Boulevard -- raises money for Petaluma-area causes and awards scholarships to local students entering the automotive or film industries, the newspaper said.
The organization has donated $120,000 to local charities since 2005.
