'Carrie' stage musical set to close

NEW YORK, March 23 (UPI) -- A stage musical based on Stephen King's 1974 horror novel "Carrie" is set to close in New York, producers said Friday.

The final performance is scheduled for April 8. The show will have had 34 previews and 46 performances by then.

Directed by Stafford Arima, the musical is performed at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Manhattan. About an abused teenage outcast with supernatural powers, the show has music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen.

"MCC, the authors, and the director achieved what we all set out to do -- to rescue 'Carrie' from oblivion and to give her new life," off-Broadway's MCC Theater said in a statement. "Plans are under way to preserve this production for Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts, so it may live on in the memories of the thousands of theatergoers who saw and loved it."

"Carrie" hasn't been performed in New York since its 1988 Broadway production. Set in contemporary, rural Maine, the revival stars Tony Award nominee Marin Mazzie as Carrie's evangelical mother, Margaret White, and Molly Ranson as the lonely, vengeful, yet fragile title character.

The cast also includes Christy Altomare, Carmen Cusack, Jeanna de Waal, Derek Klena, Ben Thompson, Wayne Wilcox, Corey Boardman, Blair Goldberg, F. Michael Haynie, Andy Mientus, Elly Noble, Jen Sese, Mackenzie Bell, Jake Boyd and Anne Tolpegin.
