LOS ANGELES, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Melanie Griffith's publicist says the U.S. actress has a black eye because she recently underwent surgery to remove pre-cancerous cells from her face.

The 52-year-old "Working Girl" and "The Bonfire of the Vanities" star's representative explained the reason for the bruising near Griffith's eye to E! News Thursday. No other details regarding the procedure were disclosed.

The actress, who is married to film star Antonio Banderas, is to appear on the TV drama "Nip/Tuck" in 2010.

Griffith made headlines earlier this year when she checked into a rehab to work on her continuing recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
