NEW YORK, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- U.S. actress Kate Hudson says that, as a lifelong fashion fan, she loved the glitz and glamour of the costumes in her new movie musical "Nine."

"It was great. Look, I have written down here how to pronounce 'Swarovski' because I always say it wrong," Hudson told reporters in New York recently. "I'm a huge clothes fanatic."

Hudson plays an American Vogue reporter who interviews an iconic filmmaker played by Daniel Day-Lewis in "Nine," which is set in 1960s Italy.

The actress said her fascination with fashion dates back to when she was a child and she watched designer Bob Mackie create "phenomenal costumes, dresses and gowns" for her mother, actress Goldie Hawn.

"Couture, beads everywhere. As a little girl your eyes are just sparkling, going, 'Wow, it's amazing to look at,'" Hudson recalled. "And then as I started becoming a woman and the way clothes and fashion and costuming changed in my generation, working with (costume designer Colleen Atwood on 'Nine') was like a throwback to me being a little girl where there are beads and real hooks and eyes. The real deal. I remember putting on the Swarovski crystal number and it weighed like 15 pounds and I thought to myself, 'This is awesome!' This is what costuming is about and that is Colleen and that is (director Rob Marshall.) Everything is so authentic."
