Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Camila Cabello says she was "completely in love" with Shawn Mendes in the early days of their romance.

The 24-year-old singer and actress discussed Mendes, 23, during Monday's episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Cabello and Late Late Show host James Corden recalled how Cabello and Mendes visited the show in 2015 before going public with their relationship.

"I remember he was like, 'I like her. She's the one that doesn't like me,' or something like that. And at that time, I was, like, completely in love with him. And he was the one that, like, I thought wasn't in love with me back," Cabello said.

"I sat here, I remember being like, 'What the? What the?'" she added. "I remember backstage after the interview I was like, 'Why did you say that? 'Cause you know that I like you' ... It was so stupid, we were 16."

Cabello also discussed her film Cinderella, which premieres Friday on Amazon Prime Video. Cabello said the film gives a "necessary update" to the classic Cinderella fairy tale.

"I feel like this movie is just this kind of modern retelling of it where the princess, you know, she's not waiting for some prince, or anybody for that matter, to save her. She is, as Billy Porter had said, 'the CEO of her own destiny,' which I love," Cabello said.

She's got dreams and she's got ambitions and it's at a time where women aren't allowed to own shops and pursue their kind of creative vision. She's seeing this kind of societal system that's holding her back, and she is the one deciding to do something about it," she added.

Cinderella marks Cabello's acting debut. The film is written and directed by Kay Cannon and co-stars Porter, Idina Menzel, Minnie Driver, Nicholas Galitzine and Pierce Brosnan.
