Toronto Police then confirmed on Sunday that Smoke Dawg and Koba Prime had died from their injuries. Mayor John Tory said the shooting was related to gang violence.

Drake paid tribute to Smoke Dawg in an Instagram story alongside a photo of himself onstage with the rapper. "All these gifts and blessed souls and inner lights being extinguished lately is devastating," Drake said. "I wish peace would wash over our city. So much talent and so many stories we never get to see play out. Rest up Smoke."

Smoke Dawg was a member of the Halal Gang which included other rappers such as Safe, Puffy L'z and Mo-G. He recently released a new music video for his track "Fountain Freestyle."
