Broadway star Barbara Cook dead at 89

Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Broadway legend Barbara Cook, known for starring in musicals such as The Music Man and She Loves Me, has died at the age of 89.

Cook's son Adam LeGrant confirmed the actress and singer's death to Variety, noting that she died Tuesday at her home in Manhattan surrounded by family and friends.

The cause of death was respiratory failure, Playbill reported.

In addition to The Music Man and She Loves Me, Cook also starred in productions of Candide, which helped launched her career, The Gay Life, Something More!, The King and I and Show Boat.

In the 1970s, Cook reinvented her career as a singer and concert artist alongside her music partner Wally Harper. Cook put together a 1975 Carnegie Hall concert that launched a successful live album.

In 1985, Cook portrayed Sally in a New York Philharmonic concert version of the Stephen Sondheim musical Follies at Avery Fisher Hall. She would continue with similar performances, including 2001's Mostly Sondheim at Carnegie Hall, Barbara Cook's Broadway! in 2004 and again on Broadway with 2010's Sondheim on Sondheim.

Cook was married to acting teacher David LeGrant from 1952 until 1965. She is survived by their son Adam.
