Karlie Kloss apologizes for geisha photo shoot in Vogue

Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Karlie Kloss apologized Wednesday for her geisha-inspired photo shoot in Vogue.

The 24-year-old model issued an apology on Twitter after her Japanese-themed spread in the magazine's March issue came under fire for cultural appropriation.

"These images appropriate a culture that is not my own and I am truly sorry for participating in a shoot that was not culturally sensitive," Kloss tweeted to her 2.5 million followers.

"My goal is, and always will be, to empower and inspire women," she said. "I will ensure that my future shoots and projects reflect that mission. Sincerely, Karlie."

Kloss posed in kimono and a wig with a traditional Japanese hairstyle for the issue, which proclaimed to celebrate diversity. Many called out the star for cultural appropriation, with some accusing her of using "yellowface."

"Apparently no Japanese models were available for Vogue's 'diversity' issue. Thank god Karlie Kloss could fill in," one person tweeted.

"Has Vogue lost it? Karlie Kloss as a geisha. 'What look should we go for this March?' 'How about yellowface and assorted Orientalism?'" another added.

Kloss was previously accused of cultural appropriation after wearing a Native American-inspired outfit in the 2012 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. The lingerie company cut the look from its subsequent broadcast.

"I am deeply sorry if what I wore during the VS Show offended anyone. I support VS's decision to remove the outfit from the broadcast," the star said at the time.

Vogue also came under fire for the issue after some speculated plus-size model Ashley Graham was instructed to cover part of her leg on the cover. The model said last week that she struck the pose on her own accord.
