'Martin' actor Tommy Ford dies at 52

ATLANTA, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Thomas Mikal "Tommy " Ford, who starred on the 1990s sitcom Martin, died on Wednesday as the result of an abdominal aneurysm, his family confirmed. He was 52.

Ford, whose full name is Thomas Mykal, changed the spelling of his middle name in his acting credits.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son, father, brother, husband, and friend Tommy Mykal Ford," Ford's family said in a statement. "On behalf of the family, we would like to thank everyone for their love, support and prayers."

According to his Instagram, Ford had knee replacement surgery two weeks ago and was optimistic about his recovery.

Ford is best known for his role as Thomas "Tommy" Strawn on Martin.

"Tommy was not only a great costar, but he was a great man and friend," Martin Lawrence told The Hollywood Reporter. "He always brought with him his spirituality, a positive attitude, and so much joy. I am sad the world lost a great talent and that I lost a wonderful friend. God bless him and his family."

Ford also appeared on New York Undercover, The Parkers, MacGyver, Living Single, The Flash, Law & Order, and the recent Uncle Buck TV series.
