NEW YORK, July 8 (UPI) -- Shawn Mendes announced that his second album, Illuminate, will drop on Sept. 23, and that he will preview the album at a special event at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 10.

"If somebody told me six months ago that I'd be playing Madison Square Garden, I would not believe them," Mendes said in a video posted to Twitter.

Illuminate is the follow-up to Mendes' successful debut album, Handwritten, which included hits like "Stitches," and "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

Mendes also announced that pre-orders for Illuminate begin on Friday with two songs off of the album available for instant download.

Tickets for the Madison Square Garden show go on sale July 16, the day after Mendes kicks off the North American leg of his tour in Florida.
