LOS ANGELES, June 23 (UPI) -- Sony's upcoming Norse mythology-infused sequel God of War was influenced by a canceled Star Wars television show.

The game, first revealed during Sony's E3 2016 press conference, features returning protagonist Kratos, who teaches a young boy -- his son -- how to fight.

According to developer Cory Barlog from Sony Santa Monica, Kratos' less aggressive nature was inspired by a collection of scripts that were written for a cancelled, live-action Star Wars drama.

"It was the most mind-blowing thing I'd ever experienced. I cared about the Emperor," Barlog explained to Venture Beat about being able to read the scripts while he worked at Lucasfilm.

"They made the Emperor a sympathetic figure who was wronged by this [expletive] heartless woman. She's this hardcore gangster, and she just totally destroyed him as a person. I almost cried while reading this. This is the Emperor, the lightning out of the fingers Emperor. That's something magical," he continued about how the script made him care for the iconic villain, something the team is trying to accomplish with Kratos now in the new God of War.

The Star Wars project, entitled Underworld according to SlashFilm, was cancelled back in 2005 and was to take place between Episode III and Episode IV in the series. Creator George Lucas was also reportedly working on the project.

God of War, which received some of the most fanfare at E3, still has no official release date but will arrive exclusively for the Playstation 4.
