HOLLYWOOD, June 22 (UPI) -- Darth Vader looms large in the new stand-alone movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Movie, but it's still not completely clear what his role will be in the story line.

The new villain in this flick, Director Krennec, played by Ben Mendelsohn, is trying to appease the emperor, all the while, the black enforcer is present, even when he's not on screen, Entertainment Weekly reported.

The film is designed as a story that fills in some of the missing pieces about how the Rebellion got the plans for the Death Star so they could eventually destroy it - a scene that took place in the original Star Wars movie, released in 1977.

The story takes place on a new planet, just before Episode 4, ABC's Good Morning America reported.

It follows the story of prisoner Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), as she rebels against the Empire. She is then hired by the Resistance to steal plans from the Death Star.

The new film, directed by Gareth Edwards, also stars Mads Mikkelsen -- taking on the role of a father figure, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Felicity Jones and Forest Whitaker.
