"We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son. We ask that you respect our and, most importantly, our child's privacy during this time."

McAvoy, who is best known for his work in the X-Men film franchise, met Duff on the set of the British television show Shameless and they wed in October 2006. They have a 5-year-old son named Brendan.

No reason was given for the split.

McAoy will soon be seen in X-Men: Apocalypse.
