PHILADELPHIA, April 25 (UPI) -- Soul artist and "Me and Mrs. Jones" singer Billy Paul has died at the age of 80.
The Philadelphia native died Sunday in his home in Blackwood, New Jersey, after recently being diagnosed with cancer according to Paul's manager Beverly Gay.
"We regret to announce with a heavy heart that Billy has passed away today at home after a serious medical condition," reads a message also confirming his death on Paul's official website.
"We would like to extend our most sincere condolences to his wife Blanche and family for their loss, as they and the world grieves the loss of another musical icon that helped pioneered todays R&B music. Billy will be truly missed," it continued.
Recognized as a pioneer of soul music, Paul begun his career performing with music legends Nina Simone, Miles Davis and Charlie Parker before releasing his biggest, number one hit, 1972's "Me and Mrs. Jones" which received a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Male Vocal Performance.
"Me and Mrs. Jones" which described an extra-martial affair, has been covered by Hall and Oates and most recently singer Michael Buble in 2007. Paul released over 15 albums throughout his career. He is survived by his wife Blanche Williams.
