LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Actress Andie MacDowell says she doesn't mind sitting in the coach section of a plane, but when she buys a first-class ticket that is where she wants to be.

MacDowell ignited a social-media firestorm when she complained during the weekend that American Airlines had bumped her from first class to the less-luxurious coach cabin on a flight. While some Twitter users defended her, others called her out for seeming elitist.

"Oh! Poor baby. Forced to sit with the unwashed masses," Twitter user Jim Collins chided, for instance.

But the Magic Mike XXL, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Groundhog Day star responded to criticism that she sounded privileged by tweeting: "I'm very happy flying in coach I'm happy on a bus or the subway but if I play for first class, that's where I want to be, that was the point."

"Lessons learned never complain on Twitter & don't pay for first class on American Airlines, only express gratitude...can we move on now."
