John Legend, Juanes perform live across from Eloy Immigration Detention Center

ELOY, Ariz., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- John Legend and Colombian singer Juanes performed a joint concert across from the Eloy Detention Center Wednesday in support of immigrant rights.

The A-list performers gathered with about 150 members of inmates' families, and immigrants' rights groups including Puente, National Day Laborer Organizing Network, the Arcoiris Libertarian Team and the Arizona Queer Undocumented Immigrant Project, The Arizona Republic reports.

After visiting the detention center, which currently keeps 1,500 immigrants waiting for deportation, Juanes said his "soul breaks" for those incarcerated inside. "It's very difficult to see people deprived of their freedom. We must give a voice to the voiceless," he is quoted as saying by the Republic.

Legend and Juanes visited the center in partnership with the #FREEAMERICA campaign against immigration detention, for which they are on a Listening and Learning tour.

The Grammy award-winning musicians reportedly performed Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" to close their live concert, which took place across the street from the center. The concert also included Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Legend's single "All of Me," among other tunes.

Although the concert was said to be meant for the inmates inside the center, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement reports they were confined to their cells for the duration of the event.

"Residents of the Eloy Detention Facility's south side were confined to their cells and residence pods for approximately one hour after concerns arose that an unsanctioned concert being conducted within view of the center's south recreation yard might provoke a disturbance," ICE spokeswoman Virginia Kice said in a statement.

On social media, Legend and Juanes documented their day in Arizona, highlighting #FREEAMERICA and its mission.

"This is all part of our listening and learning tour for Free America," Legend said in a video uploaded by the Puentes social activist group on Twitter. "Today we're focusing on how the immigration enforcement system intersects with our mass incarceration system."
