'Making a Murderer' creators: Avery should have been found 'not guilty'

NEW YORK, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Documentary filmmakers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi say they think the subject of their Making a Murderer series, Steven Avery, should have been found not guilty.

During their appearance opposite Stephen Colbert on The Late Show Tuesday night, the creators of the popular Netflix docu-series discussed the process of justice and why it took them 10 years to complete the project.

"My personal opinion is that the state did not meet its burden in Steven Avery's case or [his nephew] Brendan Dassey's case," Ricciardi said, Demos immediately echoing the statement.

Making a Murderer follows the unique story of Steven Avery, who was falsely convicted of rape and jailed for 18 years before being exonerated based on new DNA evidence. During a hefty lawsuit with the police department, and within two years of being freed, Avery was accused of a murder, with the same department building the case.

Colbert commended Demos and Ricciardi for building Making a Murderer on something other than a "whodunit" scenario.

"We actually like to say it's more of a how-dunit. What we were documenting was the process," Demos said. "That's what justice is, it's a process. So, can we rely on these verdicts in the end?"
