Matt Damon brags of 'botany powers' in new 'Martian' clip

WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A new clip from upcoming sci-fi thriller The Martian features Matt Damon's character's video diary and the quantified hurdles he has to overcome in order to survive his rescue from Mars.

In Martian, based on a novel by Andy Weir, Mark Watney (Damon) is forced to survive several years on Mars after being left behind by his crew during an other-worldly sandstorm. The latest clip from the flick features Watney adding up the amount of existing food he has to sustain himself in his solitude on the red planet while also mentioning he still needs three years worth of food to survive.

"I gotta figure out a way to grow three years worth of food here, on a planet where nothing grows," Watney says. "Luckily, I'm a botanist," he adds before saying, "Mars will come to fear my botany powers."

Twentieth Century Fox's The Martian also stars Jessica Chastain, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Kate Mara and Sebastian Stan. The film hits theaters Oct. 2.
