I'm Dying Up Here is written and executive produced by former comedian Dave Flebotte (Will & Grace) with Carrey also executive producing. Endemol Shine Studios and Assembly Entertainment will produce the series.

Characterized as a "dark comedy," the program will be based on William Knoedelseder's 2009 nonfiction novel covering the era's comic community.

"The 1970s LA comedy scene gave rise to some of the biggest and most influential performers of the last half-century," Showtime president David Nevins said Tuesday according to The Wrap. "Who better than Jim Carrey and Dave Flebotte, who both were there, to tell the story of that special era along with the complicated and talented performers that dared to grab an open mic?"

The pilot will be directed by Jonathan Levine.
