ORLANDO, Fla., May 12 (UPI) -- One of Olive Garden's well-known items just got promoted.

On Monday, the food-chain announced, via Twitter, the introduction of breadstick sandwiches, writing: "Just when you thought breadsticks couldn't get any better... Introducing the Breadstick Sandwich, coming this summer!"

Starting June 1, patrons can order lunchtime favorites like chicken parmesan or a meatball sandwich served between two breadsticks.

A spokeswoman for the restaurant, Jessica Dinon, told Mashable: "We've been evolving our menu a lot over the past year and we're really trying to give our guests more ways to enjoy the things that they love. We know our guests love our breadsticks. It's iconic."

Nine months ago, Olive Garden's parent company, Darden Restaurants, was shamed by activist investor Starboard Value for its shortcomings. One of them being the quality of its unlimited breadsticks at the Italian eatery.

Dinon did not directly comment about the executives' opinion on the newly added menu item, but said: "It's not about giving our guests too many breadsticks. It's about making sure that every breadstick they receive is perfect."
