Sofia Vergara talks frozen embryo dispute with ex Nick Loeb

LOS ANGELES, May 5 (UPI) -- Sofia Vergara has opened up about her ex-fiance, Nick Loeb, who is fighting for custody of their frozen embryos.

The 42-year-old Hot Pursuit star told Howard Stern on Monday that "a kid needs parents."

"I wouldn't want to bring kids to the world where it's already set against them. It would be so selfish," Vergara said.

Loeb, who split with Vergara last year, wrote in a New York Times op-ed last week that he wanted to bring their frozen embryos to term using a surrogate.

"When we create embryos for the purpose of life, should we not define them as life, rather than as property?" Loeb wrote. "Does one person's desire to avoid biological parenthood (free of any legal obligations) outweigh another's religious beliefs in the sanctity of life and desire to be a parent?"

But Vergara told Stern that she and Loeb twice signed documents agreeing not to make any unilateral decisions regarding the embryos.

"If it was so serious for him, this issue -- which I totally respect because it's serious -- then you should've taken it more seriously at the time," Vergara said. "You have to follow what you sign!"

Vergara said she rarely discusses the dispute with her new fiance, Magic Mike star Joe Manganiello.

"We try not to think about this because we can't do anything," Vergara added. "It's signed, it's done, we have a contract and that's it."
