LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Orange is The New Black writer Lauren Morelli is dating actress Samira Wiley following the realization that she is gay while writing love scenes for the show.

Morelli, who was married to Steve Basilone when she started working on the show, has since filled for divorce and attended this year's Emmy Awards with her new girlfriend, Wiley, who plays Poussey in the acclaimed Netflix series.

Morelli came out as gay in May in a powerful essay she posted on Identities.Mic where she detailed how she came to learn about herself while writing for the show.

"I realized I was gay in fall 2012, one of my first days on the set," she wrote. "It wasn't so much one thing, but the sum of many small details: how uncomfortable I felt around groups of lesbians or how I considered myself (shrug) a "not very sexual person." When considered alone, these seemed like little quirks that made me me. Wanting to read a book instead of have sex is a perfectly reasonable preference to have, right?"

Morelli goes on to say that after some time on the show she was eventually "forced to consider a question that had never, ever occurred to me before: Holy [expletive], am I gay?"

Two year's after her realization, Morelli is "now out to my family, my friends, and most of my co-workers on 'Orange.'"

The third season of OITNB returns to Netflix in June 2015.
