Bening plays Nikki, a widow who meets and falls in love with a man who looks exactly like her deceased husband. Director Posin told the Hollywood Reporter that the premise for the film is based on a real-life experience of his mother's.

"She...was walking across the street at the crosswalk when she saw a man coming toward her. He looked like a carbon copy of my dad years after he had passed away. She told me...and I was very moved by it and I started to obsess about it, dream about it, and eventually write about it."

Bening added that she "really wanted to work with Ed [Harris]" on the film and that it is "a very intimate movie, very intimate story."

The Face of Love opens in theaters on March 7. The film was previously screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2013, and will open the Sun Valley Film Festival on March 13 this year.
