Actor Joe Son to be sentenced for torture

NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Actor Joseph Hyungmin Son faces 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced next month for sexually torturing a California woman in 1990, officials said.

The woman, who was 20 at the time, was walking her dog on Christmas Eve and enjoying holiday lights in the neighborhood when she was pulled into a car and raped numerous times at gunpoint by Son and another suspect. Son and the other man are also accused of sexually assaulting her with the weapon before releasing her naked with her pants tied around her eyes, the New York Daily News said Monday.

Son was charged in 2008 with numerous crimes after his DNA was obtained for a probation violation in a separate incident and found to match a sample taken from the rape victim nearly two decades earlier.

Son, a Korean-born mixed martial artist, was convicted last week only of torture because the statute of limitations on the other charges had expired.

Son, 40, is to be sentenced Sept. 19, the newspaper said. He is best known for his work in the films "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery," "Bad Blood," "Shootfighter" and "Shootfighter II."
