Naomi Campbell to testify at Taylor trial

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, July 10 (UPI) -- British model Naomi Campbell has agreed to testify at the trial of former Liberian strongman Charles Taylor, who allegedly once gave her diamonds.

Outside Organization, a public relations company representing the supermodel, announced her decision late Friday, the BBC reported. In a statement, a spokeswoman said Campbell has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

"She is a witness who has been asked to help clarify events in 1997," the spokeswoman said. "Miss Campbell has made it clear that she is willing to help the due process of law."

Taylor, who was ousted as president of Liberia in 2003, is on trial in The Hague on war crimes charges. Prosecutors say Taylor used diamond sales to fund a civil war in Sierra Leone.

Campbell has never publicly acknowledged Taylor gave her diamonds in 1997 at a reception for former South African President Nelson Mandela. Prosecutors say she told actress Mia Farrow about the gift and Farrow may also be asked to testify.

"I don't want to be involved in this man's case," Campbell told Oprah Winfrey during an appearance on her TV show. "He has done some terrible things, and I don't want to put my family in danger."
