TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Jennifer Hudson, her personal life splintered by violence, re-emerged in public Sunday, singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl in Tampa, Fla.

Hudson, who wore a blue jacket over a white suit accessorized with an armful of bracelets and large hoop earrings, offered an emotionally tinged gospel-and-soul version of "The Star-Spangled Banner." She took a deep breath before she started singing and concluded by exhaling, the New York Daily News noted.

The performance preceding Super Bowl XLIII was the 27-year-old Oscar-winning singer's first since her mother, brother and nephew were killed last October.

Hudson's resurgence will continue next Sunday when she sings at the Grammy Awards. She also is filming a video for her song "If This Isn't Love" and is expected to make appearances for the charity MusicCares.
