Ingmar Bergman's house for sale

FARO, Sweden, July 1 (UPI) -- The former Faro home of late Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman is being sold by his children to the highest bidder at an auction.

Bergman died in July 2007 at the age of 89. He is buried next to his wife, Ingrid, in a cemetery on Faro, a small island in the Baltic Sea.

The Local newspaper said the sale is in keeping with the famed director's last wishes that the house, which was built in 1967, be sold via auction.

"We have no idea who the buyer will be," Bergman's son Daniel told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Documentary filmmaker and longtime friend Marie Nyrerod said Bergman helped design the sprawling seaside property and always cherished it.

"For him it was security and inspiration," she told Expressen.

"Faro has always been expensive, but this is a unique place. It be worth as much as one can imagine," Gotland real estate agent Leif Bertwig told Expressen.

Bergman's estate, including proceeds from the sale of the house, is to be divided equally nine ways among his eight surviving children and the children of Bergman's son, Jan, who died in 2000, The Local said.
