'Vantage Point' looks down from top

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- The narrative thriller "Vantage Point" opened at No. 1 in U.S. theaters this weekend, Box Office Mojo reported Sunday.

The Dennis Quaid movie about the assassination of the president, pulled in an estimated $24 million in box office receipts. Last week's top movie, "Jumper," was second at $12.65 million and was followed closely by "The Spiderwick Chronicles," which also slipped one spot to No. 3, at $12.6 million.

No. 4 was "Step Up 2 the Streets" at $9.79 million in estimated ticket sales, followed by "Fool's Gold" with $6.27 million and "Definitely Maybe" at $5.18 million.

A new comedy, "Be Kind, Rewind," starring Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover and Mia Farrow, broke in at No. 7 with $4.1 million, just a hair above Oscar-nominated "Juno," which has stayed in the Top 10 for 12 weeks.

The top tier of films was rounded out with "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" with $3.99 million and "There Will Be Blood" at $2.56 million, which climbed back in after placing 12th last week.

Gone from the Top 10 were "The Bucket List," which spent eight weeks in the top rankings, "27 Dresses" and "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour."
