No more chianti for new director Hopkins

NEW YORK, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Anthony Hopkins says his new venture as a director for the surreal drama “Slipstream," just released in the United States, has been refreshing for him.

“I just do it as an experiment. It keeps my mind active, and it’s kind of fun,” the 70-year-old Hopkins told the New York Post on his foray into writing and directing.

Hopkins, widely known for portraying psychologist-turned-serial-killer Hannibal Lector, makes his directorial debut in the film, which portrays the struggles of a screenwriter whose characters appear in real life.

The film challenges audiences with the collision of reality and fantasy. “Well, this is a very strange story. I don’t know what it’s about,” Hopkins said of the film, which he also wrote.

Hopkins spoke of his interest in memory and the “peculiar nature of existence” in his most recent exploration.

He also noted he begins work on a movie examining the making of Alfred Hitchcock’s epic thriller “Psycho” in December.

Asked if his future included a side of fava beans and a nice Chianti, Hopkins replied, “I’m done with all that.”
