So-called 'fifth gospel' on book shelves

ROME, March 20 (UPI) -- "The Gospel According to Judas," the "fifth gospel" that diverges from gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, hit the selves Tuesday with Rome's blessing.

Written by British author Jeffrey Archer in collaboration with one of the pope's leading theological advisers, Professor Francis Moloney, the "fifth gospel" is viewed by some Catholics as a way of bringing the Christian gospel to Archer's 125 million readers, the Times of London said.

The story, which contends that Jesus was a prophet and not the Messiah, is told by the son of Judas, who, according to Archer's version, did not commit suicide. Other points the book makes: Jesus never turned water into wine, he did not walk on the water and he never calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee.

Archer said he has secured the services of South African Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu to narrate the audio version, the Guardian said.
