SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- San Francisco eclipsed Los Angeles as the gay adult entertainment industry capital, with nearly every major gay adult content studio centered in the city.

The movies themselves also have shifted -- from DVDs and videotapes to the Internet. Downloaded gay porn most likely comes from servers also based in the city on the bay, the San Francisco Chronicle said Friday.

This weekend, both transitions will be acknowledged at the ninth annual Gay Video News Magazine Awards -- the Oscars of the genre -- at the Castro Theatre Saturday.

"Now that a critical mass of companies can be found here in San Francisco, more outside companies find it beneficial to relocate here to take advantage of the porn-friendly climate," said Chris Ward, co-founder and president of Raging Stallion.

How big gay porn is isn't clear. Studio chiefs estimate the gay segment was 5 percent to 10 percent of the overall adult film market.
