Motown's Joe Hunter dead at 79

DETROIT, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Motown staple, keyboardist and Funk Brothers member Joe Hunter has been found dead in his Detroit apartment.

Hunter's cause of death was unknown, but he was diabetic and his son told the Detroit News that he was attempting to take his medicine when he died Friday. He was 79.

Hunter began his long musical career in the 50s, backing up legendary acts like Jackie Wilson. He went on to work with Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, incorporating several different musical styles into his playing.

Hunter and the Funk Brothers left Motown in 1972 along with many of its other legendary groups and performed solo in various venues throughout the country during the 80s.

"He will be welcomed in heaven," Funk Brother Bob Babbitt told the Detroit News. Hunter is survived by a daughter, Michelle, and three grandchildren.
